Description
Israeli currency redenomination - last day of Pruta postage rates: 5 Jan 1960 postmarked registered printed matter air mail, sent from TEL AVIV to AMSTERDAM Netherlands & franked 600 Prutot for the period postage rate (200pr 25g printed matter + 180pr registry fee + 200 additional 25g weight, 20pr overpaid) using 2x tabbed stamps of the 12 Tribes series on their last day of use + tabbed 1959 Independence stamp, tied by 2x strikes of the TEL AVIV-YAFO-7 postmark; tied on back by Israeli censor mark; unsealed per printed matter regulations. Contains original Bulletin #90 (flier) of the Israeli postal service in regards to the forthcoming issuance of new Agorot denominated Provisional stamps (as of the next day, 6 Jan 1960). A rare example of "last day" Prutot franked mail - here sent overseas. The day after posting Israel's fractional currecy was redenominated by a factor of 1000, changing it from "Prutot" to "Agorot". Of note the specialist literature incorrectly quotes a rate of 20pr as the registry fee in this period (as of Jan 1959) - it was actually 18pr as per postal documents from 1958 at least into early 1960.
