Description

Late Mandate era mail to Lydda airport hotel: 23 Feb 1948 postmarked printed matter cover sent from JERUSALEM to addressee at the Terminal Hotel at Lydda Airport, meter franked 5 mils for the 3m period postage rate; unsealed per printed matter regulations. The meter is index coded A5 - it belonged to the British Institute of Engineering, here on its last documented date of use (Sach #G6); the overpayment is due to the fact that this specific meter had fixed currency settings, so the value could not be adjusted for specific types of mail. The hotel was the last site evacuated from the airport on 25 April when an armored car of the Koppel Rosenberg taxi service evacuated 20 hotel staff, passengers & BOAC employees.
