Re-Opening of Lydda Airport 24 Nov 1948 - UNIQUE private 1st day mail registered cover on custom designed envelope created by the artist Otte Wallish, addressed to a family member (likely his wife) in HERZLIYA & return addressed to himself there; franked 40 mils using horizontal pair of 20m stamps of the 1948 New Years / Flying Scroll issue (Ba #13) designed by Wallish & tied by 1x strike of the airport's post office postmark (Nacht #405/1) on front + 2x on the back, on its 1st day of use; backstamped same day TEL AVIV-8 (registry division) transit & next day arrival. Slit open at bottom.

The cover's front bears the custom handwritten caligraphic message in Hebrew "OPENING OF THE LOD AIRPORT | 22 HESHVAN 5708 25.11.48" & is affixed with a TEL AVIV head post office imprinted registry label #9005 (very low) whose name is obliterated & manuscript adjusted in Hebrew to "LOD AIR PORT". Per Tsachor only 1 other registered cover from this event is known, there with the red text handstamp for the official opening - but here a uniquely designed cover by Wallish.

Press reports from the day write that the Israeli flag was hoisted on the terminal building the day before and that on the 24th the airport officially opened for service, including its post office - from which the first letter was posted by the Minister of Communications, David Remez. It is unclear why the 25th was written as the opening day on this cover.
