1948 War of Independence affected mail: 25 Jan 1948 postmarked air mail cover to NEW YORK, return addressed HAIFA but posted in TEL AVIV; franked 65 mils for the period base postage rate & tied by 2x strikes of the head post office postmark of the public counters; machine backstamped 30 Jan arrival & locally re-routed; opened gently at back. The cover was couriered outside Haifa for posting due to the dangerous security situation between Arabs and Jews in the city at this time - a rare example of this kind of postal history.
