Description
FPO 233 at Goldschmidt House - proving cover: 3 Dec 1946 postmarked local JERUSALEM cover sent to addressee at the British Army's officer's club (Goldsmith House) from unidentified sender at post office box return address; the addressee was not found, address crossed out & cover marked in pencil manuscript "Not in Officers Club Now / Return to Sender" & backstamped 8 Dec 1946 Field Post Office FPO 233 return (3 days after Proud's last known date of use - he doesn't record the location of this FPO); machine front-stamped same day transit at the Jerusalem head post office.
As per a 1 Jan 1947 double ring postmark of the HPO's public counter tying a 10 mils frank the cover and traces of an earlier postmark beneath it and partly on the field + signs that an earlier address existed below the present one to a female addressee, the cover may have re-sent on that date: as per an additional pen notation on front "not P.O.B 1237" there may have been difficulty tracing the revised addressee; the cover is gently opened at back & signs of staple holes as if a post office notice had been attached.
Of historical note, 2 months later on 1 March the Etzel/Irgun underground organization bombed this officers club and destroyed the building.
