Description
War of Independence late dated mail from JERUSALEM - affected by the War: 1 April 1948 postmarked printed matter cover addressed to person at Levinsky street in TEL AVIV; franked 3 mils per period postage rate & tied by machine slogan cancel; late dated outgoing intercity mail from Jerusalem (a remarkable feat as much of its mail is observed couriered for posting outside the city in this period), as siege conditions worsened so that by 25 April the city's Mandate postal service essentially ceased functioning. In Tel Aviv the cover was affected by the security situation affecting the area of the address, which was near the Florentine neighborhood of southern Tel Aviv, approaching Arab JAFFO: the cover was not attempted to be delivered to the street address and instead routed to the addressee's post office box for him to pick up - a common postal practice for certain streets and zones in Tel Aviv at this time. The security situation affecting southern Tel Aviv reached its peak in mid-late April when Jewish forces surrounded JAFFO and besieged it, causing it to capitulate on 13 May. Unsealed per printed matter regulations.
