Description
Major Coil Discovery - 7 mils machine vended coil stamp: 13 Oct 1937 postmarked registered commercial cover on imprinted business postal stationary, sent from JERUSALEM to TEL AVIV & franked 18 mils for the period postage rate (5m base letter + 13 registry fee), paid using 2x undocumented types of coils stamps - vertical pair of 2 mils on thick vertically ribbed paper (with single pulled tooth on top and bottom horizontal perimeters, from the dispensation by pulling the stamps out of the machine) + hitherto unknown vertical pair 7 mils on thick vertically ribbed paper (top stamp with jagged edge tear resulting from the dispensing machine gripper); tied by 2x strikes of the REGISTERED JERUSALEM oval postmark + 2x on back; backstamped same day TEL AVIV transit-arrival; slit open at left.
As per ongoing research by this cataloguer the generally accepted theory that coil stamps were produced exclusively on "thin semi-transparent vertically ribbed" paper is incorrect, as stamps on this paper have been observed lacking any signs associated with the characteristics of coil stamps; this cataloguer has also published findings that the compilation of orders in Norman Collins "Crown Agents Acquisition Books" is at least 40% incomplete. The finding here of the hitherto undocument 7 mils coil stamp joins a similar finding from recent years of 20 mils coils stamps (there with a coil leader), as well as discoveries of coil stamps on other paper types - to be published in a forthcoming article in "JerusalemStamps Bulletin". Ben-Arieh certification enclosed.
